Child Safety Policy

How Parent to Parent Association Qld Inc (P2P) keeps children and young people safe, and how to raise a concern.

Last updated: August 2026

Our commitment

P2P supports adults with disability aged 18 and over. Children and young people may occasionally be present when we are doing our work. This is most likely the younger sibling of a person we support, during a home or community visit.

We have zero tolerance for child abuse in any form. Any concern raised about the safety of a child will be taken seriously and dealt with in a consistent, thorough way.

Our values of Respect, Inclusion, Commitment and Honesty guide how we keep children safe, alongside our obligations under the Child Safe Organisations Act 2024 (Qld), the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 (Qld), and the Child Protection Act 1999 (Qld).

We are committed to the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, so they feel safe, welcome, valued and respected. This reflects the Universal Principle that underpins Queensland's Child Safe Standards.

We treat every child and young person fairly, and respect their individual needs, including disability, culture, language, gender and family background.

Families can request a copy of our Child Safety Family Handout at any time.

How we keep children safe

  • Every staff member, volunteer, contractor and Board member who may have contact with a child holds a current Working with Children Blue Card
  • Everyone at P2P completes child safety training and follows our Child Safety Code of Conduct
  • Staff conduct their work in visible spaces.
  • We will always try to have a parent, carer or two staff members present whenwe are working with a child.
  • We will never photograph or film a child without proper and informed consent
  • Our child safety practices are reviewed every year to make sure they stay effective

How our staff and volunteers will behave with children

Our staff and volunteers will:

  • treat children with dignity, respect and fairness
  • listen to children and take their concerns seriously
  • keep clear, professional boundaries at all times
  • stay visible to others while working with children, wherever possible

They will not:

  • form a personal relationship with a child outside their professional role
  • be alone with a child in a private space without good reason
  • give gifts or special treatment that singles a child out
  • contact a child through personal phone numbers or social media

When more than one child is present, for example, siblings during a home or community visit, staff supervise how the children interact with each other, and step in if anything raises a concern.

If you have a concern about the safety of a child or young person

If you see something that worries you, or a child or young person tells you something that doesn't seem right, please let us know. We take every concern seriously.
